As In Kavanagh's poem of Christmas memories, three platonic figures enigmatic forms against the sky ride across the hilltop, at once belonging to nature and set apart from it.Small spaces for contemplation confound their modest scale by encapsulating at their cores tiny gardens, idealized images of the world outside.
The year 2005 saw the completion of four hermitages in Glencomeragh, three on the hillside (above) and one lower down on the water's edge (below). Built to a unique design and constructed and finished to the highest standard, they offer the visitor a never to be forgotten experience. Each hermitage is centred around a sacred space, which invites you to connect with your inner self. This space is open to the elements, symbolizing the vulnerability at the centre of each human heart. At the same time the hermitages reach outward, to bring you closer to the wonders of God's creation in beautiful natural surroundings.
They are dedicated to the theme of light, which has a special significance in the Christian tradition. Their names Cluain Sholais (meadow of light), Cloch Sholais (Stone of light), Crann Solais (tree of light) and Uisce Solais (water of light), celebrate the fields, rocks, woods and mountain treams which surround them. At night, the three hermitages on the hillside are enclosed in a circle of light symbolizing guidance and protection. In Rosmini's own words, these special places invite you to
'Adore, Be Silent and Rejoice.'
